Australia to Tour England for the Rugby League Ashes in 2025
A Kangaroo tour is about to make a comeback as gameplay wise, the rugby league Ashes are set to be revived after 22 years. RL Commercial has set up the talks reviewing the possibility of a three-Test series in the year 2025.
Possibly upcoming Ashes matches can be played in Wigan’s Halliwell Jones Stadium and Leeds’ Headingley. Love Rugby League was apprised that one of the matches is sure to be at Wembley.
Kangaroos are enthusiastic about making a trip to England
The rugby league world was in chaos last night after it was revealed that the Australian team is interested in touring England, as Ashes are about to be revived. Since 2003, the two sides have not met in the iconic test series, and as both are optimistic looking forward to the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, it would be a tremendous gain for both of the nations from this series.
The initial exchanges have begun, as so far arranged by the RFL. Confirming that a three-Test series is expected to be played, The RFL are keen to have one Test played at Wembley and another at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and possibly Old Trafford later. Among possible other sites for the final Test would be Wigan, Hull and Leeds.
The very first Ashes Series was contested in 1908 in Australia, where the hosts managed to win 3-0. An Australian touring side was not met with hostility by fans in the Park Royal Ground, in fact it was an overly friendly crowd. The Kangaroos began their opening Test with what appeared to be a cheer – probably a ploy to get the spectators involved more than an actual warning – and with a hat-trick of his own from James Devereaux, the match ended in a 22-22 tie.
The RFL has plans to reinstate the Ashes along with the restructuring of it’s international calendar as Great Britain’s players are scheduled to tour the Pacific countries in 2023, while in 2024 New Zealand is slated to visit. If that is the case, including Australia in the mix will be a huge advantage for the sport which is more likely to fill the stadiums where they will be playing.
These are early days discussing
It has been reported that the Kangaroos would consider visiting England in 2025 for a Test series with the British that would be part of the Ashes. This will restore the historic battle between the English and the Australians in the rugby league. The first full Ashes series was first held in 1908 and no less than 39 tests between the two sides have been completed since that date.
The last one was in 2003 when the British were defeated by the Kangaroos who won three games in a row. Following a revision of the international rugby league schedule, this new series is most probably going to be played in England against the backdrop of France pulling out from hosting the 2026 World Cup due to other engagements. Since Australia won the tournament in 2022, it will now take over the duties of hosting the men’s, women’s and wheelchair competitions in October as well as November, with matches taking place in Papua New Guinea as well.
RFL Commercial has in a statement made the night today indicated that initial talks have been held with the Australian Rugby League Commission on the possible revival of the Ashes in 2025. It is probable that the three Tests will be contested at important sites across England, with Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley already being tipped as early favorites for one of the games.
For reasons of player welfare, it is most unlikely that the Kangaroos will be playing extra club games in each of the cities they visit, as has been the case in the past Ashes tours. The RFL are already marketing the new Super League season at the national stadium and making the trip of the Kangaroos would be a realistic boost for the game in Britain.
Venues are on the table
Rugby league fans are in a frenzy as Australia prepares for an English tour to compete in the test Ashes series. In a move that has got everyone talking, RL Commercial, the RFL’s commercial division, said that early discussions have taken place with the Australian Rugby League Commission on the plans to bring back the historic contests.
Kangaroos are eager to undertake a tour, that should enhance thier chances of hosting not only the men’s and women’s, but the wheelchair World Cups as well, which would help them bring back some financial success to England. The competition would also mark the first competitive event to take place in the UK after 2021, when an anticipated visit to the French iteration of the tournament was postponed due to COVID-19 circumstances.
The RL ashes were initially contested between Australia and Great Britain. 2003 was the last time Britain hosted an Ashes competition, where Australia was able to sweep the series with a 3-0 scoreline.
The First three matches of the restructured format are expected to take place in London, and possible venues include Wembley Stadium as well as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The latter recently hosted the Challenge Cup final where over 51,000 fans came to witness Wigan’s win, highlighting how popular the venue had become. There are also strong rumours that a match could be played at Bolton Wanderers’ new home, the Macron Stadium. The new venue itself opened in 2019, but has shown a potential for filling seats.
The Kangaroos are reviving a traditional tour
The Kangaroos have expressed their interest in touring England and have started initial talks concerning a visit. Since 2003 when the world champions completed a 3-0 whitewash on Great Britain the series has not been staged in the country. The tour would be an opportunity for rugby league to try to make some money from the phenomenal interest that always accompanies The Ashes.
The words “the ashes” first appeared in print on a mock funeral notice published directly after Australia’s first test win on English soil in 1882. However, it was clear that English cricket was in a mess. To put it bluntly, the game was still recovering from the impact of industrial unrest that hit the north’s cotton mills.
Australia appears on the rugby league calendar as one of the best gardens to visit and its always fun to watch the matches because of the thousands of fans that attend the games. In 2025, it will be 75 years after the sport was established as a world sport and the possibility of there being an Ashes series with England is guaranteed to attract big crowds.
During the previous Ashes series, an unprecedented number of points were recorded at Twickenham during the second Test between Australia and England 107. This could be widely attributed to brilliant efforts from winger Mark Elliot who scored three tries. The game was also historical thanks to the Kangaroos who made a war cry before the match which was arguably designed more as a means for entertaining the audience rather than trying to send out any strong warning.
