Range Rover Sport in India
India is the first country outside of the UK where Range Rover Sport SUVs are locally produced. They join the Velar, Evoque, Jaguar F-Pace and Discovery Sport that are already assembled here at JLR’s Chakan plant.
The long-wheelbase diesel HSE and Autobiography variants are on sale now with deliveries commencing this month.
Price
The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will be locally assembled at JLR India’s Chakan plant near Pune, the company’s first time producing its iconic SUVs outside the UK. The facility currently assembles the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar F-Pace and Discovery Sport.
The localised Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are priced significantly cheaper than the CBU versions, making them up to Rs 56 lakh more affordable. They’re offered in the Dynamic SE variant with a petrol or diesel 3-litre engine, and both will be available in the new mild-hybrid HSE LWB Autobiography trim that Delhi-NCR dealers are likely to be hungrily hoovering up.
The locally-assembled Range Rover will be sold in the 3.0 Petrol LWB Autobiography and the 3.0 Diesel LWB Autobiography spec, while the pinnacle 4.4-litre V8 SV Edition will continue to be imported. Interestingly, the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will be the first luxury SUVs from the brand to be locally produced in India, with production set to start next month. Global production will continue at the Solihull facility, which will also be home to the upcoming fully-electric EV model and the pinnacle SV range.
Variants
Jaguar Land Rover has begun local assembly of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs in India at its Pune plant. It is the first time that the luxury carmaker has started assembling these vehicles outside the UK. This move will help in mitigating the high import duties and make the two flagship models more affordable in the price-sensitive Indian market.
The locally-assembled Range Rover is available in both 3.0-litre petrol Autobiography LWB and 3.0-litre diesel HSE variants and the company has priced them up to Rs 56 lakh cheaper than the import versions. However, the short wheelbase version and 4.4-litre V8 SV Edition will continue to be imported as CBUs.
The Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are built on the company’s MLA-Flex architecture and offer a host of features like all-terrain capability, air suspension, and a 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system that runs on the latest generation Pivi Pro operating system. It also offers advanced driver assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking, road departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. The cabin gets premium materials and comes with a minimalist theme.
Engines
For the first time ever, Jaguar Land Rover has started manufacturing Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs outside of the UK. This is a massive development for the brand and also significantly reduces the waiting period for buyers.
The luxury SUVs will be locally assembled at the company’s Pune-based facility. They will join the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, and Jaguar F-PACE which are already manufactured here.
Both the models will be available in Range Rover Autobiography and Range Rover Sport Dynamic SE variants. They will be powered by the brand’s 3.0-litre diesel mild-hybrid engine in D300 spec that makes 346bhp and 700Nm. The petrol option is the mighty P400 version that produces 393bhp and 550Nm.
Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Range Rover Sport SVR is the more dynamic offering that gets a host of performance upgrades. It features an assertive design with a reprofiled front bumper and vents designed for improved brake cooling. The SVR is also equipped with bespoke suspension settings that offer better turn-in, mid-corner grip, and body control.
Transmissions
The Range Rover Sport is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This makes it effortless to drive on city streets as well as highways.
The SUV is available in both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol engine produces a mighty 400hp and 550Nm. It has a new mild-hybrid system that contributes to the fuel economy of the car.
This allows the SUV to accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 6.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 234kmph. The diesel version churns out 346hp and 700Nm. The diesel variant is also available with a nippy EV mode that adds an extra kick to the engine’s response.
Local production will help Jaguar Land Rover bring down the price of these SUVs in India. This will also reduce the waiting period for buyers as these vehicles are currently imported as Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units. Besides the Range Rover Sport, JLR’s Pune plant also assembles the Range Rover Evoque and Velar, and the Jaguar F-Pace. This enables the company to mitigate high import duties and make these premium SUVs more competitive in the price-sensitive Indian market.
Safety
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has started local assembly of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport in India, making it the first country outside of the UK to produce these luxury SUVs. The SUVs will be assembled at JLR’s facility in Pune, where they also manufacture the Velar, Evoque, and Jaguar F-Pace. This move will help in bringing down prices and shortening delivery times, allowing more Indian customers to enjoy the bespoke luxury of these SUVs.
The locally-assembled Range Rovers will be available in the Autobiography and Dynamic HSE variants with long wheelbases. The SUVs will come powered by the same 3-litre turbo-petrol and diesel engines as their imported counterparts, mated to 8-speed automatic transmissions. However, prices have been brought down by up to Rs 56 lakh due to local production, with deliveries slated to begin on May 24 for the Range Rover and August 16 for the Range Rover Sport.
Both models offer a host of state-of-the-art safety features, with the Range Rover Sport receiving a top-class 5-star NCAP rating. The SUV was rated high for Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection, and also scored well for Driver Assistance systems.
